Our Story
ABOUT US
Everything sold on Fairspil is second hand. Every mirror and every decorative piece we list has been previously owned and used before it reached us. We do not sell new stock.
Our story
Fairspil began with a mirror that nobody wanted.
It was leaning against a wall at the back of a house clearance in Brabant, spotted glass, a heavy frame with half the gilding worn off, and a price that was basically an apology. We took it home because leaving it felt wrong. It hung in the hallway for a week before someone asked where we had found it, and that question turned into a small idea that we could not shake off.
We registered the business on 1 February 2025 under the name Inkoop en Verkoop Turnhout, a vennootschap onder firma with two partners, based at De Wagenmaker 31 in Veldhoven. On paper it says retail in second hand goods, no clothing, and buying and selling second hand furniture through the internet. In practice it meant a lot of early mornings, a van that was always slightly too small, and a garage that slowly stopped being a garage.
Fairspil is what that business became online, and the description on that registration is still exactly what we do. We buy second hand, and we sell second hand.
What we actually do
We look for second hand mirrors and used decorative pieces that already have a life behind them. Old bevelled glass, brass and rattan frames, ornate rounds that came out of hallways and bedrooms decades ago, plus the smaller things that finish a room. Vases, candlesticks, small framed pieces, odd bits of ceramic that are far more interesting than anything sold in a set of four.
Every single item on this site is used. None of it is new, none of it is reproduction, and none of it comes shrink wrapped in a box. A mirror that has hung somewhere for forty years will show it. There will be foxing in the corners, a chip in the frame, a patch where the silvering has gone soft. We photograph those spots rather than hiding them, and we describe the condition of each piece honestly in its listing, because that is the only fair way to sell something that has been owned before. New things can be perfect. Old things are better company.
Each second hand item is cleaned, checked and, where it needs it, given a light repair before it goes on the site. Nothing is stripped back or restored into something it never was. If a frame is sound and the glass is safe, we leave it alone.
How we think about it
We are a small operation, not a warehouse. Because everything we sell is second hand, our stock arrives in bursts, from clearances, auctions, private sellers and the occasional lucky Saturday, so what you see today may not be there next week. When something sells, it is genuinely gone, because there is only ever one of it.
That also means we can take the time to answer properly. If you want extra photos, a closer look at a mark on the glass, a measurement, or an honest opinion about whether a piece will work above your sideboard, just ask. You are speaking to the people who bought the mirror, carried it up the stairs and wiped the dust off it.
Thanks for reading this far, and for giving these second hand pieces somewhere new to hang.
